PERKINS, Charles.

PERKINS, Charles. † ≠   Flight Sgt 2719 RFC died at Cirencester Red Cross Hospital on 28/4/1918 following a flying accident in a collision with another aircraft, age 33. He received his pilot’s licence in November 1917, after already having served two years in France. He was buried with full military honours in Skewen St John’s Churchyard, Nr Neath, S Wales. (Western Mail 3/5/1918 funeral report, listed as ‘On Active Service’ ). b 1885 Featherstone, 1891C at Hathersage. son of John and Martha Perkins, a Lay-Preacher living in 1918 at Lyncliffe House, Castle Street, Skewen. Brother of Edwin, Lionel, Percy, Sidney and Walter Perkins. He does not appear on 1911C. Family lived in Hathersage at least from 1890/1895 as three brothers were born there during this time. Their father was a railway sub-contractor, and presumably was employed on the new line being built through the Hope Valley around this time.

WILSON, Job.

WILSON, Job. b 1884 Castleton  lived 1911C at Roslyn Rd, Hathersage, a Gas Works Labourer. Married at Hathersage Church, Nov 1918 to Gladys Annie Ranshaw, working as a servant for the Winders family at Hall Cottage, her father was Rueben Ranshaw, a bricklayer living at Broom Cottage, The Dale. He died in 1929. Job’s father a farmer was Charles Wilson, died 1890, his mother Ann, b Ashopton c 1848. Job listed as Serving with H M Forces, but we have not been able to find any more details. Family Tree shows Job died at Salisbury, Wilts in 1969 and had a son Jack (1920-1938).

WILLIAMS, Thomas David Gordon

WILLIAMS, Thomas David Gordon. PO 2867S Royal Marines Light Infantry. A Bank Clerk, b1884 Peel, Isle of Mann. His father was vicar at Ranmoor Church, Sheffield, married 25/12/1914 at Hathersage to Alice Maude Harrison Unwin b Hathersage 1894, (sister of Stuart Unwin & Frank Unwin). A Freemason initiated into Ancholme Lodge, Brigg on 17/11/1919. An Air Warden in WW2. He died 5/9/1952 at Lascelles Road, Buxton. His wife died 18/8/1973 at Upton by Chester.

RYLANDS, Horace John.

RYLANDS, Horace John. Lt 2/1 Cambridgeshire Regt M.G.C. bc1887 Torquay. An Engineer, he married Kate McGillivary (b 1882 Sheffield) at Hathersage Church on 12/6/1917 when she was living at Hathersage. They were later at 50 Crimicar Lane, Sheffield. She died 1948. He died 1961, (registered at Bakewell).

RENDEL, Andrew James. M.C.

RENDEL, Andrew James. M.C. †  ≠  Capt (Acting Maj) RFA. Commissioned 1907, went to France Autumn 1914, awarded M.C. Spring 1916, and shortly afterwards was wounded by shell-shock, Returned to active service early 1917. Died of wounds received on the same day; 29/7/1917. Buried Noeux les Mines Communal Cemetery, near Bethune, France. b1888 Kensington, London, a grandson pf Sir Alexander Rendel, he was educated at Rugby and the Royal Miltary Academy. As a Lieutenant, he married Gladys Louise Romer, b 1889 Marylebone, London, at Hathersage Church on 17/5/1913, while she was living at Nether Hall. Mr & Mrs Fairholme of Nether Hall were witnesses. Two sons of Capt H. A. Hamilton acted as page boys, as reported in SDT 19/5/1913 p9. His obituary was in the Army & Navy Gazette, 7/7/1917 p10 and his photo appeared in the Illustrated London News on 28/7/1917 p18.
